Ann Poole, MSc in School & Child Applied Psychology

Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Fredericton, New Brunswick, but I now make Calgary my home.

What program of study and degree are you doing?
I am completing a MSc. in School & Applied Child Psychology

When do you hope to complete your degree?
I am going on Internship in the fall and hope to graduate in the fall of 2009

What is your undergraduate degree? Which university is it from?
I have a BA with first class honours and distinction from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick

What is the name (or working title) of your thesis?
Cyber Bullying: The New Era of Bullying

Can you give me a synopsis or brief description of what your thesis is about?
My thesis is a descriptive study on cyber bullying. I am looking at prevalence rates across different forms of cyber bullying and any gender and grade differences there may be.

Do you have a personal relationship to the topic? What gives it personal relevance to you?
It is just very interesting to me and I feel that everyone has some firsthand knowledge of bullying, whether it be as a bully, victim, bystander, or multiple roles.

Dr. Tanya Beran

What are your career plans after graduation?
I plan to register with the College of Alberta Psychologists and work for a school or school board before eventually taking on some private practice. I am also getting married July 2009!

What are your hobbies outside of school?
I was a dancer from the age of 4 to 18 and competitive for 5 years. I still enjoy dancing, but only recreationally. I also enjoy movies, book club, and scrapbooking.

What did you like most about the U of C, Faculty of Education, Division of Applied Psychology program?
I really enjoy the people and the willingness of all of the professors to share their advice.

What is one of the best memories of your study so far?
I greatly enjoyed traveling to Toronto this past spring (2008) to present at the PREVNet annual meeting. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet and learn from others who are dedicated to studying and preventing bullying.

What is one of the highlights of your study so far?
Having the opportunity to discuss the findings, both formally and informally, so as to educate others about the reality of cyber bullying

Why did you choose your area of study or specialization?
I have wanted to be a psychologist since high school and I love working with children. As such, school and applied child psychology seemed like a good fit and I have come to learn more about and appreciate the educational side more throughout the program.

How did you choose the U of C program?
Location was a big factor for me, as was faculty research interests. I wanted to be very interested in my area of research as it can be a big undertaking. Also, my fiance's work is in Calgary, so location was crucial.

If not yourself, who would you be?
Someone who can clean my house better :)

If you were to invite any three people for dinner, who would they be?
Dali Lama, Jimi Hendrix, and Madonna . . . although that answer could change at anytime.

What is your idea of happiness?
Being secure in your self and your current situation. Also, being in love and moments of success.

What is your main fault?
Being overly critical of myself.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
I would love to be a wedding planner.
