Application Procedure

Please check carefully to ensure that you have satisfied all of the requirements.

All applications must include:

  • A completed application form

  • A typewritten resume

  • A concise rationale for the application (500 words or less)

  • Two (2) letters of reference (submitted in sealed envelopes with the referees' signature across the seal)
  • One (1) official copy of transcripts from all post secondary institutions attended. These must be submitted in sealed envelopes from the Registrar's Office of the issuing institutions.

Gathering all the materials takes considerable time, so start early. IT IS THE APPLICANT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THE FILE IS COMPLETE. The Division will not accept incomplete applications nor send out reminders.

Admission is very competitive. The number of applicants makes it impossible to admit all students who meet the minimum criteria for admission. The Division therefore reserves the right to refuse admission to any applicant and to admit only those students who are judged by the Admissions Committee to be best qualified and in accord with the unit's vision and resources. The large number of applications also makes it impractical to provide individual feedback to those not admitted.

Advanced Credit Guidelines:

Students will not normally receive advanced credit for courses taken as an unclassified student if these courses have been taken to make up background or GPA deficiencies. Course work intended to make up should be taken at the senior undergraduate level, not the graduate level.

Graduate level courses which have been taken as part of another completed degree or diploma program are not accepted for advanced credit. Applicants who have taken relevant graduate courses which were NOT part of such a program, and which were NOT required for GPA improvements or to meet background requirements, may request advanced credit for such courses at the time of application. The maximum possible advance credit is two Full Course Equivalents. Master's applicants are advised not to take program graduate courses prior to their acceptance into the program.

NOTE: Practicum courses are integral components of the Counselling Psychology and School Psychology programs. Performance in practicum courses often involves obligations to outside agencies and clients.

NOTE: Although a teaching certificate is not required for admission to the Division's graduate programs, applicants without such certification should bear in mind that employment opportunities in educational settings may be limited for graduates without this qualification.

Request for Advanced Credit:

If you are intending on requesting advance credit for any graduate level courses, you need to do this at the time of the application process, and you are allowed to request up to 4 half courses, the equivalent of 2 full courses. You will need to submit a letter addressed to the: Admissions Committee, Division of Applied Psychology, and list the courses that you are requesting advance credit for. If you are requesting advance credit for a course outside of the University of Calgary, you will need to attach a course outline for the course(s) you are requesting advance credit for.
