The questionnaire as a method of revealing the personality and interests of its taker, has a literary and popular culture history.

The Proust Questionnaire is based upon responses of French writer Marcel Proust. At the end of the 19th century, when Proust was still in his teens, he discovered a questionnaire in an English-language album belonging to his friend Antoinette, daughter of future President Felix Faure, entitled "An Album to Record Thoughts, Feelings, etc." At that time, it was a fad among wealthy English families to answer such a list of questions that revealed the tastes and aspirations of the taker. Proust answered the questionnaire several times in his life, always with enthusiasm.

Most 21st century TV viewers will be familiar with James Lipton, the host of "Inside the Actor's Studio." He is known for giving an adapted version of the Proust Questionnaire to his guests. And a similar questionnaire is regularly seen in a section of the magazine Vanity Fair, answered by various celebrities. The graduate student Q & A is a modified version of the Proust Questionnaire.
