March 4, 2009 -- Dr. Anne McKeough, a professor in the Division of Applied Psychology at the University of Calgary, has been awarded the Canadian Association for Educational Psychology (CAEP) - Robbie Case Memorial Award for Major Contributions to Educational Psychology in Canada. It will be presented at the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) annual conference at
Carleton University in Ottawa,
May 23-26, 2009.

“Dr. Case was a trusted mentor to Dr. Anne McKeough and served as her PhD supervisor. I know that Anne holds a special place in her heart for him,” says Dr. Vicki Schwean, Associate Dean of the University of Calgary’s Division of Applied Psychology.

Dr. Case, who died unexpectedly in 2000, is one of Canada's most influential psychologists. At the time of his death, Case was professor emeritus of education and a highly respected researcher in the field of child cognitive development. He held the position of director for the University of Toronto's Institute of Child Study.

“As Anne contemplates retirement, receipt of this prestigious award gives strong recognition to the significant contributions that she has made to the field of developmental educational psychology throughout her career,” says Dr. Schwean. “We are incredibly excited for her.”

Nominations for the award are made by at least two members of CAEP from different institutions. Criteria for the award are excellence of work in educational psychology as evidenced in publication, exemplary practice, or other contributions and considerable influence on the profession.

Dr. McKeough teaches graduate courses in the Developmental and School Psychology Programs and undergraduate courses in the Teacher Preparation Program. Anne's research is in the areas of cognitive development and developmentally-based instruction, and focuses on children's and adolescents' use of narrative meaning-making in scholastic, social, and personal contexts. She has published extensively in all these areas.
