Policy on Adjunct Appointments (Limited Term)
The Office of Graduate Programs in Educational Psychology (GPEP) recognizes that qualified professionals whose primary professional affiliation is outside GPEP or the University can contribute significantly to the realization of training, research, and/or administrative tasks. In some of these instances, it may be in the best interests of both the individual and GPEP to award an Adjunct appointment to such a person both to recognize and to facilitate such contributions. To make such appointments meaningful to their recipients as well as to assure their positive contribution to GPEP's reputation and pursuit of scholarly excellence, adjunct appointments will be accorded in keeping with both university guidelines and the following GPEP policy.
A. Eligibility for Adjunct Appointment
- Adjunct faculty normally possess the PhD or equivalent in psychology, applied psychology, educational psychology, or in a related discipline and/or
- Hold a professional or administrative position of direct relevance to GPEP activities and objects.
- Adjunct faculty normally have a primary full-time appointment which is outside GPEP or the University of Calgary.
- Adjunct appointments are normally made when it is the most appropriate means by which to recognize an individual's contributions to GPEP.
B. Divisional Rights and Privileges of Adjunct Faculty
- Adjunct faculty are often asked to become field supervisors for student practicums and student internships. These offer a small stipend that is paid to the adjunct at the end of the training experience.
- Qualified and appropriate adjunct faculty are provided the first opportunity to teach graduate courses sessionally, whenever this is available within GPEP. This requires separate application by the adjunct.
- Under certain circumstances, adjunct faculty are permitted to co-supervise master's or doctoral students for their thesis work. The other co-supervisor must be a faculty member within Graduate Programs in Educational Psychology. Permission to co-supervise a graduate student requires separate application by the adjunct to GPEP on an individual student basis. The decision to supervise will be made by the Graduate Coordinator of GPEP in conjunction with the applicable Program Area Director/Coordinator. (The constitution of graduate student committees is subject to final approval of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Sessional teaching, which is a paid enterprise, requires that the adjunct have sufficient expertise in the subject matter and that he or she receives positive evaluations by students for consideration of possible contract renewal.
- Renewal or continuation of adjunct appointments is dependent on continued significant academic responsibilities and a level of professional deportment consistent with the highest standards of the academic profession.
- Adjunct faculty may be asked to provide a copy of their home-unit annual report to GPEP or an annually updated curriculum vitae by December 30th of each year.
