What is the name (or working title) of your thesis?
Adapting to a New Land: Immigrant Adolescents' Stories of Courage
Can you give me a synopsis or brief description of what your thesis is about?
Canada has been a welcoming land for numerous centuries. People, immigrants and refugees alike choose to leave their country with the hope of a new beginning in a land unspoiled by war and conflicts. Children and adolescents exposed to conflict-ridden environments are among the most vulnerable of any immigrant population and for whom the adaptation process to a new land is not well understood. In fact, immigrant adolescents move into an established community with its own sense of normalcy and its own culture and rules for living, both of which tend to be dissimilar to what they have experienced. Thus, understanding how adolescents successfully adapt to Canada after having lived in a country impacted by armed conflicts is crucial to the development of appropriate and effective school and after school programs supporting immigrant youth in their adaptation process.

Do you have a personal relationship to the topic? What gives it personal relevance to you?
One of my sisters is from a country impacted by civil unrest and chronic levels of violence. Back in the ‘70s, services designed to support immigrant children and adolescents adapt to Canada were inaccessible or nonexistent. As a result, my sister struggled immensely throughout her adaptation process. While the number of programs supporting immigrant youths has increased since the ‘70s, some of the issues that my sister experienced are similar to what immigrant youths are experiencing. Yet, these issues do not need to exist. Inspired by her courage and that of all immigrant youths, I am passionately committed to positively contribute to immigrant youth's adaptation process.
