Loan period, overdues, and fines

Loan period

The Doucette Library’s loan period is two weeks for all borrowers and for all types of materials, other than items that may be on reserve or ‘library use only’.
Due Date Reminders
As long as the library has your current email address on record,  MacKimmie Library will send you an email three days before your books are due reminding you to return or renew your checked out books before the due date. Materials may be renewed in person, by phone, or online, as long as there are no holds on the item.
We do not send due date reminders to anyone without email. Make sure we have your current email address. Students can do this by checking the MyUofC PeopleSoft Student Centre to make sure their email address is accurate.
Blocked from check outs or renewals?
If you have any overdue books or if you have $10.00 or more in overdue fines, you are blocked from any further check out of library items or the renewal of any items you already have checked out.
Please contact the Borrowing Service Point where you have overdue books or fines to resolve the problem and restore your borrowing privileges.
Library Fines
Fines are incurred when borrowed library materials are returned later than the due date.
  • The daily rate at the Doucette Library for late materials is $1.00 per day per item.
  • A one day grace period occurs if the item is returned the day after the due date. This grace period is forfeited if the item is returned more than one day past the due date.
  • Fines continue to be applied to late items even if the Doucette Libary is closed but another university library on campus is opened. If all libraries on campus are closed then no fine will be incurred for that day.
  • Once you have a fine of $10.00 or more, your borrowing privileges are suspended until the account is paid in full.
  • The Doucette Library accepts only cash for fine payments but at MacKimmie Library you can pay for fines incurred at any campus library using a credit card (either in person or by phoning them at 403-220-5963)
Lost and Damaged Books
  • if you report that a book is missing, the replacement cost of the book, a $15.00 processing charge or fines, if applicable, will be assessed.
  • If library material is returned in damaged condition, such that it must be replaced, the replacement cost of the material, the $15.00 processing charge or fines, if applicable, will be assessed.
