November 2, 2009 – Imagine having to drop out of school to help with household chores or care for your siblings. Many young women in Kenya and Malawi do not have to imagine such a scenario, for them, it is a reality. The University of Calgary chapter of the World University Service of Canada is offering students a chance to change this reality by purchasing tickets to a cabaret fundraiser being held Friday, November 20th at The Den. Money raised will go to the Shine A Light campaign, an initiative providing solar lamps to young girls. These safe, cheap and sustainable lamps allow these girls to study in the evening after completing their household duties. Shine A Light also provides remedial classes for students to improve their school performance and make up the classes that they missed during the day as well as secondary school scholarships. Tickets for the cabaret will be sold in MacEwan Hall from November 17th to 19th for $5.00. For further information about WUSC and the Shine A Light campaign visit the awareness booth being held Wednesday, November 4th from 11 am to 2 pm on the first floor of MacEwan Hall.
