External Awards

There are many external awards and granting agencies from which students can apply for funding. For a comprehensive listing, please go to the Graduate Awards Database and choose the External Funding option.

The awards listed here are a small sample of awards that Education students are eligible for.


Alberta Graduate Student Scholarship

Value: $3,000

The Alberta Graduate Student Scholarship is open to all second year full-time Master’s students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, and a resident of Alberta. Candidates must have completed the first year of a Master’s program as a full-time student and have confirmed full-time registration in the second year of the same Master’s program at the time of tenure. Students who enter into the first year of another program will not be eligible. Students who do not proceed directly into the second year of study will also not be eligible for this award. Students are not entitled to receive this award and the Ralph Steinhauer Award of Distinction or the Arts Graduate Scholarship for the same period of study. Applicants are recommended by GDER to the FGS Scholarship Committee.

Izaak Walton Killam Pre-Doctoral Scholarships

Value: $25,000 per annum

These scholarships are open for competition among PhD students who apply to the Uof C's Open Scholarship competition. Approximately nine awards are made annually to the top ranking students in the Open competition who are eligible to hold them. The scholarship has the highest monetary value of any of the university's awards and includes a research allowance. The awards are for two years, the second year being subject to satisfactory progress.


Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Grants

SSHRC supports graduate training in the social sciences and humanities in Canadian Universities. SSHRC awards are for students applying to, or registered in, a Master's or Doctoral program or a combined MA/PhD program in the social sciences or humanities.
Application deadline to the Graduate Division of Educational Research is October 31.
Recommended applications are forwarded to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Scholarship Committee. Forms can be found on the SSHRC website.


Ralph Steinhauer Awards of Distinction

  • Masters level - up to $15,000
  • Doctoral level - up to $20,000

The Ralph Steinhauer Awards of Distinction are open to exceptional students studying in Alberta. Applications and further information is available at Alberta Learning Information.
