The Educational Leadership specialization draws upon the social sciences and humanities to prepare researchers and practitioners in Kindergarten - Grade 12 (K-12) settings for the analysis and resolution of issues and problems related to educational policy and the direction and management of schools, school systems, other institutions, and governmental bodies concerned with public and private education.
This specialization positions graduates for administrative and research-related careers with an understanding of organizational change. Students specializing in this area will focus upon various issues related directly to educational leadership:
- Community-school relations
- Research methodologies
- School administration
- Politics in education
- Site-based management
- Change
- Communication
- Educational policy
- Staff development
- Planning
Each student accepted into one of this specialization's degree programs - PhD, EdD, MA, and MEd - will consult with an assigned faculty member to plan a program that is satisfactory to both the student and the academic supervisor/advisor. Each student accepted into the Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certifcate program in Educational Leadership will plan a program with the specialization coordinator.
Programs will include courses required of all students in a particular degree program, appropriate research courses, selected leadership courses offered within the specialization and leadership-related courses offered by other specializations, and, possibly, independent study courses. Students normally will plan their programs to fit the appropriate program or degree template, but individual programs may vary according to each student's academic background, professional interests, and career goals.
