EdD online program
The EdD online program is primarily web-based with some face-to-face courses. Normally, students take their face-to-face courses at the beginning of their first and second year in program by attending classes at the University of Calgary campus, offered over two weeks in July. The on-campus experience is important in order to acquaint students with the program philosophy and to build a strong academic community. The rest of the program is completed primarily online.
Effective January 2008
EdD online students are normally required to take a total of four full-course equivalents (eight half-courses), including:
- EDER 719.04 Doctoral Orientation (face-to-face at the UofC campus, each July) in first year.
- EDER 700 Seminar for First-year PhD/EdD students (full-course) - in first year.
- One or both of EDER 701.01 Qualitative Research (half-course) and EDER 701.02 Quantitative Research (half-course).
- 3-4 additional half-courses, normally from a student’s Specialization area, plus
- A candidacy examination demonstrating the student's competence to undertake a thesis.
- A Doctoral thesis and an oral examination on the thesis.
Note: While all students follow the above program, the program may be modified (with the exception of EDER 700 and one research course which are required), after consideration of a student’s academic and professional background, subject to the approval of the student’s supervisor and the Graduate Coordinator or Associate Dean (GDER). Please consult with your supervisor if you have questions about your program requirements.
Workplace and Adult Learning specialization courses at the doctoral level will include:
EDER 733.01 Adult Education and Global Issues
Globalization has transformed the world we live in. The integration of the world economy requires the mobility of people, knowledge, and capital across national boundaries, which has consequently reconfigured our economic, social, political, cultural, and environmental relations. This course aims to explore the role of adult education in responding to the challenges of globalization.
EDER 733.02 Issues in Workplace Learning
Relying on education, psychology, sociology, environmental and organizational literature, learners explore how theoretical and critical analyses can be applied to the international field of workplace learning. Aspects of workplace learning will include, types of knowledge (e.g., contextual, practical, tacit, informal learning) in the context of work, developing and delivering the processes of learning to adult learners within the workplace (e.g., workplace learning computer-mediated communication, work-educational partnerships, work teams, workplace learning case studies), evaluation of workplace learning strategies, and future workplace learning research directions through an adult education framework.
EDER 733.03 Journey of Adulthood
This course explores multi-dimensional aspects of development (physical, emotional, social, cognitive) in early, middle, and late adulthood, including the influence of racial and ethnic diversity. With reference to theoretical literature in lifespan psychology (e.g. Csikszentmihalyi, Erikson, Jung, Levinson, etc.), empirical research, and personal reflection, participants will investigate the implications of developmental changes for adult learning in work situations and leisure time activities. They will explore how to use their knowledge of adult development to craft right livelihood and to promote optimal well-being.
