Kevin George Alderson

Dr. Alderson was born in Edmonton but has spent most of his adult life in Calgary. He returned to Edmonton for two years to undertake doctoral study in counselling psychology between 1995 and 1997. Throughout his 26 years as a practicing psychologist, Dr. Alderson has counselled hundreds of clients with LGBTI identities. He is the Editor in Chief of the Canadian Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy, the national Canadian peer-reviewed journal in the counselling field. Before joining the university in July 2001, Dr. Alderson was the Head of Counselling and Health Services at a community college in Calgary for several years.

For the past two years, Dr. Alderson has focused on writing two textbooks and two self-help books. His research area is primarily focused in creating a more inclusive definition of sexual orientation and in measuring this new construct. He is currently working on establishing a research team to begin work with a large data set focused on many aspects of mental health.

Dr. Alderson wrote a monthly column for the national gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) magazine, Outlooks, for several years. He is often asked for expert opinion on topics related to LGBTI issues and psychology by media at all levels. He maintains a private practice in his field of expertise, thereby continuing to assist members in the community with their psychosocial difficulties. He is often asked to provide talks to the community and be a panel member in discussions related to the LGBTI community. He is also the conference review coordinator for a section of the Canadian Psychological Association.
